SPECIAL MUSIC SCHOOL’S SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAM
Every Public school is required to establish a School Leadership Team (SLT). The team is comprised of an equal number of parents and teachers, the principal, and in our case, the music director. The parents on the team are elected representatives of the parent body, and each grade block (K-2, 3-5,6-8) has its own parent representative. The PTA president also serves on the SLT. The teachers are represented by the UFT chapter leader as well as their own teacher representatives. For more on this breakdown see the SLT by-laws on the PTA website.
The primary responsibility of the SLT is to develop an annual Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). This is a school improvement plan which targets the policies, procedures, and educational practices that create our children’s’ learning environment. When writing the CEP, the SLT must evaluate the effectiveness of the school’s educational programs and their impact on student achievement. It must define the school’s educational goals and come up with immediate and long range solutions. The goals the group sets each year must be child-centered, realistically attainable and in some way measurable. The CEP must also be aligned with the school’s budget for the year.
The SLT strives to communicate with members of the school community and ensure that all voices are heard. Representatives solicit input from families, students, teachers, and staff. The team assesses the needs and priorities of the school and where improvements in learning and student achievement can take place. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of the education that the school provides.
SLT’s are the vehicle for meaningful dialogue and consultation between parent and staff representatives. Decisions by the SLT are made by consensus and partners assume collective responsibility for the results. Members of the SMS community who are not official SLT members are encouraged to sit in on meetings and communicate with elected representatives regarding concerns and suggestions.
The SLT also serves a community building role by improving the capacity of the school to address parent and staff concerns and facilitating the involvement of the community in the development of the schools plans for improvement.
