Hello SMS Families; it’s hard to believe it is Memorial Day weekend! I hope you enjoyed the lovely weather Friday and Saturday, and are having a restful and rejuvenating rest of the long weekend. There is a lot going on this time of year, and it’s so valuable to just take a little time out to reconnect with each of our children and relax. Congratulations on making it through juries! K-8, you’ve had a fantastic round of grade concerts; and graduating seniors, we are all impressed with the level of work and expertise you have exhibited with your senior projects. We are also looking forward to the SMS Onstage concerts this week at the HS and the NDI concert the following week for the K-5.
I’d like to share a few pictures of something important to us all–the privilege of voting. We were honored to be a part of a citywide event this past week: NYC’s first Student Voter Registration Day. Mayor De Blasio, Chancellor Carranza, Manhattan Borough President Brewer, Council Member Helen Rosenthal, and Deputy Mayor Thompson were all present at the MLK campus for the event. A small group of our seniors were able to both register to vote and attend the press conference where Mayor de Blasio pledged to help New York get out the vote and give easy access and encouragement for people to register! All other students eligible to vote by November of 2018 have turned in or can continue to turn in voter registration forms to my office (G19).
K-8 PARENTS: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SMS ART FAIR:
Our annual K-8 art fair will take place on June 13 (yes, it is the same day as the Choral Concert as well!), and Ireena is looking for helpful hands to hang our students’ work. She will get started first thing in the morning at 8 am, and will just keep plugging away until it is up. We are looking for about 4-6 people who can shift in throughout the day.
SMS COMMUNITY CHORUS:
It’s not too late to join the Community Chorus, which will perform in the K-8 Spring Choral Concert in Merkin Concert Hall on Wednesday, June 13 at 1 pm. The remaining rehearsals are in the Kaufman Music Center, 129 West 67 Street, at the following times:
Thursday, May 31, 8 – 9am
Wednesday, May 6, 8 – 9 am
Wednesday, May 20, 8 – 9 am
Merkin Concert Hall
If you are unable to attend the next rehearsal but would still like to participate, please contact Sean Hartley at email@example.com.
ALL SMS PARENTS: PARENTS NEEDED FOR NEXT YEAR’S PTA EXECUTIVE BOARD
There are multiple positions open on next year’s PTA board.
Every little bit helps, and new voices and new faces are most welcome!
If you would like to learn more about any of the positions or would like to nominate yourself (or a friend!) for one of the positions, please email the nominating committee at firstname.lastname@example.org. Elections will take place this Friday morning at the June 1st PTA meeting at 9am in the 2nd Floor Cafeteria at KMC.
Congratulations to Tiffany Tsui (6th Grade). She is performing in New York City Ballet’s production of Coppelia that opened Friday evening and will run until June 3.
Congratulations to Sadie Pine (6th Grade) on her performance for Serious Fun Children’s Network‘s gala Monday night at the Ziegfeld Ballroom with Liam Neeson, Jackson Browne, and Kevin Bacon. Serious Fun Children’s Network provides camp experiences for children with life threatening illnesses.
