Lisa’s Weekly Note – March 18

Hello SMS Families! It was wonderful seeing so many K-8 parents at the Elementary and Middle School conferences on Thursday. Thank you to the PTA for providing a delicious pizza lunch for the K-8 faculty!


Wednesday, 3/21: 10th & 11th Grade: It is imperative that students arrive ON TIME to school for PSATs and SATs. They will need to be prepared with #2 pencils, and a graphing calculator. No students will be permitted to leave school early without express written consent from a parent.


It is very important that you take the time to fill out your survey, either online, or in paper form. This give the DOE and SMS valuable information about how YOU feel about YOUR CHILD’S experience at SMS. If you shop at Fairway, please note that SMS has become their Community Partner. This means that everytime you shop there, if you use your Community Partner swipe card at checkout, they will donate 3% of your purchase directly to SMS. What an easy way to get money for your child’s school. Please let me know if you need a community partner card, and I will see that one is sent home with your child.


The PTA has extended the raffle of faculty auction items through 3/28, and the drawings will take place on 3/29. Tickets are $10 each. K-8, please submit either cash or check (made out to SMS PTA) in an envelope in the KMC Lobby PTA folder (PLEASE NOTE: your envelope should contain your child’s name, the items you would like to purchase chances for, and payment for your raffle tickets). HS Students: 9/11 Memorial & Museum – Summer Volunteer Program Application Deadline: Ongoing Event: Ongoing Contact: Dana Donati 212-324-6528 Join our team of volunteers to provide a meaningful experience for visitors from around the world while adding to your resume and learning new skills. We are looking for friendly and outgoing people age 16 and older to help us for 2-3 months this summer in either visitor services or retail greeter roles. Both roles involve welcoming and engaging visitors at the memorial and the museum, and require an 8-hour time commitment per week. Full training will be provided. A boy and his dog stop the ghost of Pharaoh from ruining Passover in this whimsical, warm-hearted family musical based on children’s books by the award-winning author Anna Olswanger.


Columbia University SPLASH! Columbia University will be hosting its Spring 2018 Splash! program on March 31, 2018 from 9 AM to 6 PM. Put simply, the Splash! program lets undergraduate and graduate students teach a class on virtually any subject they like to high school students (Grades 8 to 12). Some of the classes we will offer include: Introduction to Japanese Drumming, Superfluid Helium Protein Biochemistry, History of Ballet, Fractal Fundamentals and Chaos Theory. There is an admissions fee of $25 for this event. However, we do offer full financial aid with an application on our website. Lunch will be included in this fee. The registration link can be found here: register.html. Registration opens on Tuesday March 6, and closes on Friday March 23. Many universities hold SPLASH programs.
