Lisa’s Weekly Note – April 8, 2018

Hello and welcome back SMS Families! I hope you all had spring breaks that were both exciting and restful, and I can’t wait to hear all about them. Welcome back to our HS European vacationers who should have landed just hours ago.

The school year is speeding by, and we are jumping back into action in the Elementary and Middle Schools with ELA State Testing this week, and we hope to see many of you at the PTA meeting this Friday morning. See below for details, and please note, since we have been on break, dates on the weekly and monthly calendar may change–please pay attention to any updates that come tomorrow.

3-8 students: ELA testing begins on Wednesday. Please make sure your children are well rested and fed for their two days of testing.

SMS Parents: We hope to see many of you at this Friday’s General PTA meeting at MLK (8:15am)

8TH -12TH GRADE STUDENTS: Bronx Loaf 2018 is a free, weeklong, creative writing program that serves students grades 8-12 from all backgrounds who love writing with a passion. Since 2012 we have helped nearly 300 students from New York City deepen their love of putting pen to paper.

And now, we are happy to announce that we are open and ready for business!

This year the conference will be held Monday, July 9th to Saturday, July 14th.  As in the past our goal is to create a space where students will:

-Workshop their creative writing with professional authors

-Collaborate and socialize with students from public, private, and charter schools

-Publish their writing in our anthology Breaking Bread

We have workshops in Poetry, Memoir, Fiction, and Graphic Novel. Each workshop can accommodate up to 12 students. Act fast before all the seats fill up.

Students can apply at our website:, or by clicking on the following link: Bronx Loaf.  If you can’t email your students directly, please use our quarter sheet flier attached to this email and distribute them to your students.

The deadline for applications is April 15th.
